The most frequent combo is called ballet slippers which is a very light pink along w/ French Manicure white. Honestly, andy brand will do - just make sure you have the true opaque white used for French Manicures.
Regarding how to do it, I'd recommend you first go to a salon and watch how they do it (usually only costs $10). You'll see the method %26amp; how they position their hands to get a steady white line. Usually, they put a layer of bonder on, then ballet slippers, then white stripe, then ballet slippers, then top coat/hardener.
It's really difficult to do yourself - I've tried it (and unsuccessfully), and I'm great at doing regular manicures. Sometimes the brands will have specialty kits for French manicures and those will have guidelines.
I hope that helps.
